The installer defaults to installing grub to /dev/sda even if you choose to put the root elsewhere since that is usually the disk your bios will boot from. I tried again to install to /dev/sdb (which the disk I asked the installer to use in the first place) it also fails. Is this the same issue? You tried to install grub to /dev/sda, which is partitioned with GPT. To boot a BIOS booting computer from a GPT disks requires a 1 mb bios_grub partition.
