[Bug 172452] Re: Various programs filling memory up until freeze (firefox 3.0 beta1, totem, and rhythmbox) possibly pulseaudio
The symptoms described in this bug report imply a support question instead of a bug report. ** Changed in: pulseaudio (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Invalid ** bug changed to question: https://answers.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+question/19541 -- Various programs filling memory up until freeze (firefox 3.0 beta1, totem, and rhythmbox) possibly pulseaudio https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/172452 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 172452] Re: Various programs filling memory up until freeze (firefox 3.0 beta1, totem, and rhythmbox) possibly pulseaudio
There are a significant number of shared libraries in common, yes. Are you able to reproduce the sluggishness in question if you reinstall pulseaudio-esound-compat and pulseaudio-module-gconf but _remove_ the non-Free Flash plugin (purge Hardy's flashplugin-nonfree package)? Are you able to reproduce the sluggishness with DRI _disabled_ in xorg.conf (or by using the 'nv' driver if you have an Nvidia card)? -- Various programs filling memory up until freeze (firefox 3.0 beta1, totem, and rhythmbox) possibly pulseaudio https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/172452 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 172452] Re: Various programs filling memory up until freeze (firefox 3.0 beta1, totem, and rhythmbox) possibly pulseaudio
To be honest, I'm really not sure. I know pulseaudio reloads itself after being killed, and maybe at that point. I am not a programmer (though, I'm trying to teach myself Python) and there's much I don't understand as well as I'd like to. My guess was that pulseaudio was the problem. I have since un-installed pulseaudio, and the problem seems to have stopped, thought it was not frequent. (I have also upgraded to Hardy for kicks, but I will be reinstalling Gutsy shortly, as I require open office. Perhaps a fresh install will help either fix the problem or be a cleaner sandbox to test from.) I'll re-iterate that "firefox with flash" was only one of three scenarios where my computer went bonkers. Is there something other than pulseaudio that is in common with firefox/flash, totem, and rhythmbox? -- Various programs filling memory up until freeze (firefox 3.0 beta1, totem, and rhythmbox) possibly pulseaudio https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/172452 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 172452] Re: Various programs filling memory up until freeze (firefox 3.0 beta1, totem, and rhythmbox) possibly pulseaudio
If you've killed the pulseaudio daemon prior to invoking firefox to use youtube, then how is pulseaudio to blame for "filling up memory" while firefox is in use? -- Various programs filling memory up until freeze (firefox 3.0 beta1, totem, and rhythmbox) possibly pulseaudio https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/172452 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 172452] Re: Various programs filling memory up until freeze (firefox 3.0 beta1, totem, and rhythmbox) possibly pulseaudio
@ Stephan: I was using Ubuntu Gutsy, so the versions I was using were whatever was current as of an update on the day that bug was reported. (I am upgrading to Hardy at the moment, so I can't tell you the actual version numbers, but they are the current Gutsy ones..) The pulseaudio daemon doesn't *seem* to freeze. Specifically, when I run "top" it's not taking up all available cpu power. There's cpu power to spare but the memory is quickly filling up. I can't comment on whether or not I am able to play another sound while this is happening, because by the time a sound would be played the memory bloat would stop my computer from all but basic and sluggish movement. So it's important that I immediately drop to a terminal and kill the offending application, or else I'll have to sys-rq (REISUB) to reboot my computer. @ Daniel T Chen: I have not generated any such package. In order to use youtube I have found it necessary to kill pulseaudio then load firefox. This seems to allow me to have sound as normal. Please also note that I only suspected pulseaudio was the culprit; I am not at all certain this is the case. Regardless totem and rythmbox I assume are supported by pulseaudio, and in any case this is a serious bug that if disregarded has the capacity to harm the reputation of Ubuntu. ** Changed in: pulseaudio (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => Incomplete -- Various programs filling memory up until freeze (firefox 3.0 beta1, totem, and rhythmbox) possibly pulseaudio https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/172452 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

There is no officially [Canonical-]supported mechanism for YouTube to function correctly via PulseAudio _unless_ you yourself have generated/installed an _unsupported_ libflashsupport[-pulse] package. ** Changed in: pulseaudio (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Invalid -- Various programs filling memory up until freeze (firefox 3.0 beta1, totem, and rhythmbox) possibly pulseaudio https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/172452 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thank you for taking the time to report bugs and therefore helping the developers to make Ubuntu better! Unfortunately this bug report needs more information if we are to fix it. For starters, which versions of totem/rhytmbox/pulseaudio are you using? Does the pulseaudio daemon freeze (e.g. can you play any other sounds or launch the volume control applet? ** Changed in: pulseaudio (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: None => pulseaudio Status: New => Incomplete -- Various programs filling memory up until freeze (firefox 3.0 beta1, totem, and rhythmbox) possibly pulseaudio https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/172452 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
