The problem is you configured compiz to use virtual desktops which is not supported (in hardy we don't allow you to do this). Install compizconfig-settings-manager, go to System->Preferences->Advanced Desktop Effects Settings, click on General Options, go to the Desktop Size tab, and set Number of Desktops to 1. So... when I do a Ctrl+Left or Ctrl+Right, is that switching between workspaces or viewports? The "workspace switcher" works with viewports.
