I have not tried the Live CD or a CD installation.  The problem began
after an upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy using the Upgrade Manager GUI.

By switching to the 2.6.22-14-generic kernel, the problem is fixed.

Would it help you if I tried the Live CD on the same system and let you
know the results?

Have you checked to see if your NIC works on the Gutsy Live CD or on a
CD installation? The network problem might have arisen because you
upgraded - a process known to cause many problems.
