Well that's pretty odd that you have /var/cache/fwupdate/done

1) Can you check the details on it?  When was it created?  And was that
date "after" you tried to do an update?

2) Can you break into the squashfs in your kubuntu live media and see if
it exists there too?

Thanks for looking into this. My answers:

1) I do have it. I created the folder /boot/efi/EFI/fedora/fw/ and the
update went through.

2)

● fwupdate-cleanup.service - fwupdate housekeeping
   Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/fwupdate-cleanup.service; static; vendor 
preset: enabled)
   Active: inactive (dead)

3) Live USB. Kubuntu actually.
