I have had a working 18.4 system for a few months. Today a software update ran, which I allowed like I always do. Then went to play OpenRA and it would not run well enough to play. So I was going to settings to check the display settings. Only to be presented with a Select User screen, enter password, then back to Desktop. I had to search and find how to use terminal and uninstall and reinstall. I uninstalled gnome-control-center And re-installed gnome-control-center Rebooted and still same thing. I tried opening the gnome-control-center using terminal and same thing. Select user, enter password, back to desktop. I recently switched from MATE to Gnome I experience the same problem. I have found that I can start gnome-control-center if I set the environment variable CLUTTER_BACKEND to wayland. I also facing the same problem. Downloaded 18.04.1 LTS (Jan 6, 2019) Codename : Bionic It happen when I tried to change taskbar layout from default (at left side) to bottom. Yes, I tried to put the taskbar at bottom then it crashed. I cannot click "Setting" icon, or click "change background" from desktop display. The icon "setting" (the gear icon) displayed on taskbar but if I click it, the window not display. I have already remove gnome-control-center, and reinstall it. Still not working, same result as above. This bug affects me too. Downloaded 18.04.01 today (5/10/2018) Fresh install, no changes at installation (next next next ...) Same for me after attempting to install GNOME Human Shell Theme Collection, https://www.gnome-look.org/p/1171095/, using the Install button, Human.zip file. It also removed Tweaks from Favorites, which I was able to re-save from Dash. Tweaks does run. But Settings hangs on- launch, then disappears. Same for me. I can open gnome-control-center from terminal, but if I click on the gnome-control-center icon from the menu/launchpad nothing is going to happen.
