Using 09.10 alpha 6 LiveCD on a Medion MD 97900.
Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection (rev 02)

WiFi by iwl3945 is simply unusable because the button doesn't enable the
controller (and the LED doesn't turn on).

If iwl3945 LED problems are solved, how do I fix my (his) problem in
practical terms?

I-m using Intrepid Ibex Beta and the light is working, but it-s blinking
constantly... constantly annoying! Could be user configurable at a
kernel parameter? Its better the way it used to be in Feisty Fawn (ie,
Blink only when connecting and just be on when the link is up... no
blinking under traffic). Its against Gnome HIG the constant blinking
under traffic, It just distract you with usefulness information.

The Gnome HIG really doesn't apply to this bug... this bug is about a
hardware driver, not a part of the Gnome desktop environment. This bug
exists even when just on the console.

[Bug 176090] Re: WiFi / WLAN LED not working on notebooks with Intel iwl4965 | iwl3945

2008-10-06 Thread Alvaro Kuolas
Let me explain my thoughts:

Ubuntu is trying to be a Desktop OS as it's target, and the WiFi LED is
important under a desktop environment. Ubuntu primary Desktop
environment is Gnome, so if we want a consistent user interface we
should be consistent with the UI, inside the desktop and outside with
the hardware. A la Apple, be consistent.

I think that the blinking light is useless. There are people who likes
it, there are who don't. A kernel run-time option us fair for me, but
that's a upstream decision.

Let's think that this kernel option exists: What will be the default
behavior?

My idea is: Be consistent with the UI: Gnome. Be simple and intrusive.

Status in linux source package in Ubuntu: New

 Bug description:
The WLAN LED does not glow on recent Intel-based notebooks (including Sony
Vaio, Dell Inspiron, Lenovo Thinkpad and many others - we know, please don't
list yours here), using the iwl4965 or iwl3945 WiFi drivers.

There appears to be a regression in the latest drivers in proposed,
specifically 2.6.24-20.38, where the LED does not blink at all, even with
 backports installed.

This problem is fixed for Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) in the backported kernel
modules. (Note, however, that it does not behave the same way as it used to.
The light will not blink on and off, but will be steady.) Please install
'linux-backports-modules-hardy' before posting to this bug report
complaining that your LED doesn't work:

 :~$ sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-hardy
 then:
 :~$ sudo rmmod iwl4965; sudo modprobe iwl4965
 or:
 :~$ sudo rmmod iwl3945; sudo modprobe iwl3945

Please only add to this bug if:

 a) you are informing about changes made to code or packaging.
 b) you find a duplicate bug.
 c) the backports modules don't fix your LED

2008-09-08 Thread Mariner09
I tried the 2.6.27-1 kernel as mentioned above on a Lenovo T61 and it
won't even boot. Something other than the base linux-image package must
be required.

Upgrading to Intrepid is not an option. The LED worked in -19, just not
since. Why not fix the regression and just let the light stay on solid
when wireless is active? That's at least half the fix, and probably all
most of us want.

from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/pub/next/2.6.27-rc3/), on my Lenovo 3000

The WLAN LED is on and blinking in Intrepid alpha 4. The blink is
pretty weird though - it doesn't seem to correlate with real traffic

example).

2008-08-06 Thread DannyDei
Guys I might delude a few of you but I have solved my problem !!!

Nothing very technical : it was the wi-fi alarm system in the house :
now if I go off site from the sensors I get connected immediately and
the if I come inside even in rooms where the detectors are working, the
line keeps steady and high speed.

That was why i could go wi-fi fine everywhere but home and why even
changing router the problem persisted : it was not depending on Linux
nor on the PC nor on the Router . just soem wi-fi POLLUTION in the
area.

Good luck to you for solving your problem as well.

[Bug 176090] Re: WiFi / WLAN LED not working on notebooks with Intel iwl4965 | iwl3945

2008-07-30 Thread Michael Doube
** Description changed:

The WLAN LED does not glow on recent Intel-based notebooks (including
Sony Vaio, Dell Inspiron, Lenovo Thinkpad and many others - we know,
please don't list yours here), using the iwl4965 or iwl3945 WiFi
  drivers.
+
+ There appears to be a regression in the latest drivers in proposed,
+ specifically 2.6.24-20.38, where the LED does not blink at all, even
+ with backports installed.

This problem is fixed for Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) in the backported kernel
modules. (Note, however, that it does not behave the same way as it used
to. The light will not blink on and off, but will be steady.) Please
install 'linux-backports-modules-hardy' before posting to this bug
report complaining that your LED doesn't work:

  :~$ sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-hardy
  then:
  :~$ sudo rmmod iwl4965; sudo modprobe iwl4965
  or:
  :~$ sudo rmmod iwl3945; sudo modprobe iwl3945

- I'm logging the LED status at each milestone release on iwl4965 -
- there's really no need for anyone else to add to this bug report unless:
+ Please only add to this bug if:

  a) you are informing about changes made to code or packaging.
  b) you find a duplicate bug.
  c) the backports modules don't fix your LED

Wow !! it seems that something is moving on this BUG or maybe it will
need to move on.

My experience si a singular one : Samsung Q45 with the Intel 4965
wi-fi chip, the chip gets detect only when I plug an external
USRobotics key.
Then the wireless network manager strat working detecting the Unknown
Vendor specific interface which detects all the SSL and below here it
comes the Intel corporation Pro/wireless 4965 AG or AGN network
connection detecting NOTHING not even the 100% quality signal
perfectly detected by the USR(Unknown vendor ).

Why does the network manager needs a SHAKE to recognise the intel 4965
?

Hope the increasing number of complainer would give the Ubuntu people a
push on this, particularly when Ubuntu has been said should be the best
Linux for LAPTOPs.

Thank you for your consideration on this matter.

[Bug 176090] Re: WiFi / WLAN LED not working on notebooks with Intel iwl4965 | iwl3945

2008-07-12 Thread Harvey Muller
I have not tested the linux-backports-module yet.

But I can confirm that this appears to be resolved in Intrepid Alpha 2.
This comment is being posted off the LiveCD using the iwl4965 module.
linux-ubuntu-modules is apparently not packaged yet for intrepid, so the
firmware has to be manually installed to /lib/firmware. I copied the
firmware over, removed the module then modprobed it.

And it is blinking nicely with activity also.

[Bug 176090] Re: WiFi / WLAN LED not working on notebooks with Intel iwl4965 | iwl3945

2008-07-12 Thread Harvey Muller
Tested in Hardy 8.04.1 amd64 desktop with linux-backports-module-hardy.
wifi LED lights, confirming fix on Inspiron 1420 with Intel 4965. RF
kill switch works, LED extinguishes when off, returns when on.

Doesn't blink with activity, but that's a separate issue.

[Bug 176090] Re: WiFi / WLAN LED not working on notebooks with Intel iwl4965 | iwl3945

2008-07-12 Thread Alvaro Kuolas
It's a question of taste.

See, I don't like the blink on traffic, but other people do.

Should we open a wishlist report for this feature: That the blink can
be controlled by option on module loading, with on, activity and off as
options?

And why it won't be fixed on Hardy?

[Bug 176090] Re: WiFi / WLAN LED not working on notebooks with Intel iwl4965 | iwl3945

2008-04-21 Thread Mary Gardiner
I have included the below in the bug description, in the hope that we
don't keep getting people confirming the problem:

FIX
This problem is fixed for Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) in the backported kernel modules.
(Note, however, that it does not behave the same way as it used to. The light
will not blink on and off, but will be steady.) To install these kernel
modules, install the package linux-backports-modules-hardy.

** Description changed:

The WLAN LED does not glow on recent Intel-based notebooks (including
Sony Vaio, Dell Inspiron, Lenovo Thinkpad and many others - we know,
please don't list yours here), using the iwl4965 or iwl3945 WiFi
  drivers.

The bug in the iwl4965 kernel module is being addressed by Intel.

I'm logging the LED status at each milestone release on iwl4965 -
there's really no need for anyone else to add to this bug report unless:

  a) you're the first person to log the LED status at a milestone on iwl3945 (I
don't have an adapter to test.)
  b) you are informing about changes made to code or packaging.
  c) you find a duplicate bug.

2008-04-04 Thread Dale
I have install Linux backport modules and the LED is working on my
laptop again. The only prob is the switch to turn the wireless on / off
is borked now, I can turn the wireless off and the LED turns off too,
but the wireless does not turn back on again operating the switch.

Laptop:

uname -a
Linux quails-laptop 2.6.24-15-generic #1 SMP Fri Apr 4 03:48:31 UTC 2008 i686

The kill switch not working is bug 193970, or something like it.

2008-04-03 Thread Jerone Young
This fix does not appear to be in linux-ubuntu-modules 2.6.24-14. I'm
using my thinkpad right now and no LED. What is the git entry for this
fix in the ubuntu kernel repo if it is ?

That is also the behavior of the Windows driver that Intel provides.

2008-04-03 Thread Evgeny Kuznetsov
The partial fix DOES appear to be in linux-ubuntu-modules 2.6.24-14. On
my Lenovo 3000 N100 LED is on right now (another matter is that it is
supposed to be blinking while searching for the network, but it just
stays on instead).

Re: [Bug 176090] Re: WiFi / WLAN LED not working on notebooks with Intel iwl4965 | iwl3945

2008-04-03 Thread Laurent Bonnaud
The patch(es) have been applied on the linux-backport-modules -package,
 not l-u-m.

Thank you for the tip!

Previously I had

[ 55.501127] iwl3945: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG/BG Network
Connection driver for Linux, 1.2.0

and after installing linux-backport-modules I now have:

[12350.137452] iwl3945: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG/BG Network
Connection driver for Linux, 1.2.25

Now the LED is on and I see those messages:

[12439.435517] Registered led device: iwl-phy1:RX
[12439.435558] Registered led device: iwl-phy1:TX

The LED is always on whereas with the gutsy kernel it blinked when there
was wifi network activity.

This is a partial fix but this is much better since now I know if the RF
kill-switch is on or off.

But when I reactivate wifi (RF kill-switch on then off), the LED does
not light up by itself. I have to perform a manual network scan (iwlist
scanning) to light it up again.

2008-04-03 Thread charles.figura
I can't make this fix work - when I had manually installed the iwl
driver from compat-wireless (the 1.2.26k version) I had wireless working
(though not LED). When I install the backports module (with the 1.2.25
driver) iwconfig sees no wireless extensions - so no wireless, and no
LED.

No, my iwconfig shows me:

and dmesg reports this: (attached)

So there's something else goofy going on.
