[Bug 1766067] Re: Dell XPS 9370 freezes at login screen/shortly after login with kernels after 4.15.0-13

2018-05-22 Thread Maximilian Federle via ubuntu-bugs
I reinstalled Bionic to a fresh/clean state (for unrelated reasons) and
can't reproduce the freezing with the current kernel. A bit mysterious.

[Bug 1766067] Re: Dell XPS 9370 freezes at login screen/shortly after login with kernels after 4.15.0-13

2018-05-19 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Maximilian Federle, the next step is to fully reverse commit bisect from
kernel 4.16.3 to 4.17-rc1 in order to identify the last bad commit,
followed immediately by the first good one. Once this good commit has
been identified, it may be reviewed for backporting. Could you please do
this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ?

Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions, or providing a commit
from a kernel version bisect is not fully commit bisecting.

Also, the kernel release names are irrelevant for the purposes of
bisecting.

It is most helpful that after the fix commit (not kernel version) has
been identified, you then mark this report Status Confirmed.

Thank you for your help.

4.15.18 does the same thing. I attached the syslog of this boot wherein
I could reboot with Sysrq + B.

[Bug 1766067] Re: Dell XPS 9370 freezes at login screen/shortly after login with kernels after 4.15.0-13

2018-04-23 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream stable kernel?
Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the
latest v4.15 stable kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot,
please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
"Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

Ubuntu freezes at the login screen or, if one is quick enough, shortly after
typing a few chars of the password.
Sometimes nothing except the power button works, at times I could reboot via
endless massaging of sysrq + b.

  Last good kernel: 4.15.0-13
  Mainline 4.16.3 is also affected.
  Mainline 4.17rc1 is good again.
