[Bug 1769376] Re: NMI watchdog: Watchdog detected hard LOCKUP on cpu x

2018-05-11 Thread George Crum
It appears that at some point the nouveau driver may have been updated.
Possibly when I installed mainline 4.17rc4 Kernel in recovery mode with
network enabled. System no longer randomly locks up when booted in to
kernel 4.15.

After installing Nvidia 396 driver and one final hard power off the OS
will shutdown/restart successfully in 4.17 kernel at least.

2018-05-09 Thread blair gemmer
The version that is currently working and has worked in the past is 16.04
LTS. Both 17.10 and 18.04 were non-functional for me. Tried multiple
installs, each with the same results. Unfortunately, I can't test anything
else on this machine atm as it's my work machine and I need it to be
available pretty much constantly.

Another observation around shutdown/restart. If I don't login I can
shutdown successfully.

Additionally for the installer to work I had to install this patch for
Ubiquity.

[Bug 1769376] Re: NMI watchdog: Watchdog detected hard LOCKUP on cpu x

2018-05-09 Thread George Crum
Hello,
I am having same issue. Fresh install of Ubuntu 18.04. Could not boot from
bootable flash installer until I added "acpi_rev_override=1" to boot params.
Kernel 4.15 would lockup after login screen. Was able to login couple of times
but system would eventually lockup randomly while using it and when I tried to
shutdown/restart.

I was able to install the latest kernel 4.17 in recovery mode. I can
now login however when I try to shutdown/restart system locks up. So
far I have not had random freezing of system while using. Main problem
is shutdown/restart. Completely unresponsive even when using
Ctrl+Alt+F1 or F2.

Hardware:
Dell XPS 15 9560, i7-7700HQ 2.8GHz
Touch screen disabled in bios, no fingerprint reader

If my issue is different let me know and I'll open a new bug. If there
are any debugging steps you would like me to do let me know what and how
and I'll be happy to assist.

Thank you

[Bug 1769376] Re: NMI watchdog: Watchdog detected hard LOCKUP on cpu x

2018-05-07 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a
prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v4.17 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
"Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.
