Checking, YES this option was switched on. Switching it off restores the normal behaviour. So this bug can be closed. In 17.10 the switch wasn't on or the default seems to be changed. The log looks like vlc exiting normally, so I don't see a crash here. There is no apport response and something in /var/crash for vlc.
