Okay, I see. Well, Since it seems that since we can only speculate what
might have been the problem, we cannot really identify if or what the
problem in the xine package is, nor how it can be fixed. I'm therefore
invalidating this bug.

If you disagree feel free to reopen this bug with additional information
what the bug actually is. Nevertheless, thanks for your interest in
improving ubuntu!

[Bug 179510] Re: Cannot play DVD through xine-backed players in Hardy

2008-09-26 Thread Robertjm
Changed "device used for DVD playback" and "raw device setup for DVD
access" from /dev/scd0 to /dev/dvd (media tab)

Also changed "directory a media in DVD drive will be mounted" (gui tab).
I honestly don't remember seeing this setting last year so perhaps its
something added since then?

After making changes closed xine and restarted it. Clicked on DVD button
on xine-gui and DVD plays.

Perhaps its wasn't intentional but you used the word "upgrade" in your
previous comment. I don't upgrade my system. I have separate partitions
on my system so when I move up/down to a new version of Ubuntu I also
reformat all my partitions, but /home, /home/photos and /home/parallels
and do a fresh install, so I'm not going from version X to version Y.
When I referred to updating I was talking about applying all the daily
patches to programs issued during the alpha stages.

As I read my original bug report it looks like the DVD drive in the
system used to be labeled /dev/cdrom0. I'm wondering if they referred to
the CD/DVD device in Gutsy as /dev/cdrom0, but then in Hardy Alpha1
moved on to calling it /dev/dvd, and xine didn't detect that, or there
wasn't a symlink added at that point on the Alpha, which caused the
problem at that point.

Good night/morning. Its 2:15a and I've got to go to sleep.

Robert

Okay, so if you reset your xine settings to your default, does xine now
work for you in intrepid?

I suspect that something mangled your /dev/dvd symlink in hardy, but got
accidentally (or on purpose?) fixed during the upgrade.

Robert, can you please check your /dev/dvd symlink? does it correctly
point to /dev/scd0 or something else?

sorry, I meant of course https://launchpad.net/~motumedia/+archive

that repo contains backported xine packages from intrepid to hardy.

2008-09-25 Thread Robertjm
Hi Reinhard,

Quick note. The link you gave us in launchpad is busted. Its coming up
Page Not Found.

But to answer your question, I'm not sure we are talking the same bug.
In my circumstance it was an all or nothing proposition. NO DVDs played
until I changed the settings in xine to /dev/scd0.

Since reporting that bug I've moved on to Intrepid Ibex, and my setting
is /dev/scd0. I honestly, can't remember if I made the change manually,
or whether it detected it out the door as this was a fresh install a few
months ago.

I would suggest Oscar make sure that HIS dvd is actually /dev/scd0 and
not some other device. If it were the latter it certainly would keep
giving him that error.

are you really sure you are all talking about the same bug?

in particular, can you try the updated packages from the ~motumedia PPA?
see https://launchpad.net/~motumeda/+archive for details

[Bug 179510] Re: Cannot play DVD through xine-backed players in Hardy

2008-09-14 Thread Oscar PeƱas
I can confirm this behaviour in Gutsy (upgraded from Feisty), using gxine.
Changing device used for playback, as mentioned above doesn't change anything
for me. Still getting "No input plugin was found. Maybe the file does not exist
or cannot be accessed, or there is an error in the URL.", and then "Read error
from: /dev/scd0".
The weird thing is that this seems to happen only for some DVDs. In particular,
I'm seeing this for a custom made DVD, while a commercial one works with no
problems.

[Bug 179510] Re: Cannot play DVD through xine-backed players in Hardy

2008-07-26 Thread Robertjm
Workaround:

In xine, change the "device used for DVD playback" and "raw device setup
for DVD access" from /dev/dvd to /dev/scd0.

This allowed DVD playback and eliminated the error msg I was receiving
through xine. (I have GStreamer version of Totem installed, or I'd test
it there.)
