Public bug reported:

Alpine 2.21 has a performance regression with respect to 2.20. The
"folder list" screen, which used to appear instantaneously, can
repeatedly take 5 to 10s to appear if one has a lot (a hundred or so) of
IMAP folders, and the option quell-empty-directories is set. As this
screen needs to be entered every time one changes folder, it is very
annoying.

After correspondence with Eduardo Chappa, alpine's current upstream
maintainer, he produced the attached one-line patch which fixes the
issue. (See also

Given that the patch looks simple, and the benefits are considerable,
I'd like to suggest updating the 18.04LTS package. (18.04LTS is
affected, 16.04LTS has alpine 2.20 so is not.)
