Matthias, please re-open it or create a new bug report in case you still have 
problems.
You have not mentioned which version of BOINC and Ubuntu you were using, but 
the problem might have happened due to the new CFS in Ubuntu Hardy.
This should have been fixed on 2008-02-03 with version 5.10.30-5ubuntu1 in 
Ubuntu Hardy.

The manager is just a graphical tool to see what the client is doing. Closing 
the manager isn't supposed to stop the projects. If you want to stop boinc, try 
:
sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client 
 * Usage: /etc/init.d/boinc-client 
{start|stop|restart|force-reload|status|schedule}
boinc-client run as a deamon, so you can mange it so.

And after you turn off your screen, your computer still keeps running,
using electricity and making noise.

The manager is just a graphical tool to see what the client is doing.
Closing the manager isn't supposed to stop the projects.
