You're right, thank you very much for pointing that out! Adding nouveau.modeset=1 fixed things for me as well. I have a similar problem with an Nvidia GeForce GT 730 card and the Nouveau drivers. Just rebooted to 5.0.0-8, to rule out hardware failure.
