Are you using Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron? I am and within the past couple days this functionality broke. When I click to export, f-spot dies. The Export menu didn't work for me on Gutsy at all, so I couldn't reproduce it there. No, this is not on Hardy. This is on 7.10. So it is properly not a duplicate of that other bug.
