2008-10-01 Thread Motin
@jonmjames: Very interesting. Would you mind trying out Wicd's create
network feature? Chances are that it will work perfectly when using Wicd
(this was the case for ipw2200 on my old laptop), and that would clearly
denote a bug in NetworkManager as well as confirm that the bug(s) are
fixed in the current Intrepid kernel.

Thanks man!

2008-09-28 Thread jonmjames
Update:
Connection to the ad-hoc network lasted for about 15 mins, then it lost
connection. Checked the syslog and noticed it started scanning all of the
different channels repeatedly. I'll post the msg if I can recreate it. Again
this was Intrepid Ibex Alpha 6, Live CD, creating ad-hoc network using terminal
NOT NetworkManager.

2008-09-28 Thread jonmjames
Hey all,
I just tried out the Intrepid Ibex Alpha 6 and was able to create an ad-hoc
network out of the box, but not through NetworkManager.

My setup, MacBook 2,1 Atheros Communications Inc. AR5418 802.11abgn

At first I tried setting wlan0 to ad-hoc mode and creating the network through

As the failure previously happened at Stage 2, there is a chance that
the original bugs are fixed, but creating new wireless networks is still
not possible but now due to a new bug.

Someone more qualified that can make an assumption in this matter?

Is this attached syslog output enough for the kernel / mac80211 devs to
take a deeper look at this problem?

Please tell me what more we can supply to help solving this bug.

Ok so now it is all up to the kernel. The relevant patches _should_ have
been included in .26, but according to reports above, it wasn't solved
in Intrepid Alpha 3.

I'll try the Alpha 5 LiveCD as soon as I can download it with my slow
connection...

[Bug 183303] Re: Can't create new wireless network using mac80211 based drivers

2008-08-29 Thread Leann Ogasawara
The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-
image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and
test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer
2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4.
Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced.
You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the
bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please

2008-07-22 Thread Motin
Alpha 2 never shipped with any live cds so I haven't been able to try
this, but do we have any brave Intrepid tester that can confirm that the
bug doesn't exist in the Intrepid kernel?

I just tried an "prevu
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux/linux_2.6.26-4.11.dsc";, but
it wouldn't succeed (output is attached).
How would one backport the Intrepid kernel to Hardy - anyone know?

[Bug 183303] Re: Can't create new wireless network using mac80211 based drivers

2008-07-08 Thread Motin
Hmm... no wireless devices were available when booting into the new
kernel, and iwl4965 nor mac80211 was not buildable using module-
assistant - frankly I don't know how to build modules / drivers in other
ways...

So, in the end, I was barely able to get sound (also modules), nvidia
graphics and my 3g modem setup using the new kernel, but then I started
getting intermittent total system freezes.

I guess I, too will be waiting for Intrepid Alpha 2. However, once it is
confirmed to work with those versions I really hope we can find a way to
backport the fixes to Hardy...

Cheers all!

Interesting. It just became evident that wpa_supplicant v0.6.3-2 was
already installed along with network manager 0.7: "How to: Install
Network Manager 0.7 SVN on Hardy - Ubuntu Forums" -

No need for prevu this time I guess... Still gotta wait for the kernel to
download and compile however.
Night!

@Brian: No probs!

Can't wait for the Alpha 2 live cds... I'm so excite. Really - so I'll try to
get ahead of things by just having started retrieval and compilation of the
2.6.25.10 kernel through the one-click "kernelcheck" script
(http://www.ubuntu-unleashed.com/2007/09/upgrade-to-latest-kernelorg-kernel-with.html)
as well as a backported version of wpa_supplicant/wext using prevu:

sudo prevu-init
prevu
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+source/wpasupplicant/0.6.3-2/+files/wpasupplicant_0.6.3-2.dsc

Hopefully everything will be built when I wake up.

[Bug 183303] Re: Can't create new wireless network

2008-07-07 Thread Motin
After receiving a very informative comment from NetworkManager Dan
Williams (see the upstreams linked bugreport:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=541816#c2 ), it is very likely
this bug is really a combination of one or many mac80211-based driver
bugs as well as bugs in wpa_supplicant.

@Brian Pitts, @rihasant, @dnel,@dlgandalf:
You all seem to be using mac80211-based cards/drivers, which makes it even more
viable.

@Francesco:
Since you are using ipw2200, Bug #75358 may be more appropriate for you. Dan
Williams also replied in a similar manner here, but mentions a ipw2200 patch
suggestion as well: http://www.nabble.com/NM-0.6.5-Great-Problem-td18027324.html

kernel (wireless-testing.git):
872ba53395b2a8be08c3ea2d39e225e5b4a8cb40 mac80211: decrease IBSS creation
latency
507b06d0622480f8026d49a94f86068bb0fd6ed6 mac80211: send association event on
IBSS create

Two following four patches was suggested to be able to create Ad Hoc networks
using 80211-based drivers:
wpa_supplicant:
[PATCH] wpa_supplicant: give adhoc associations a bit more time -
http://lists.shmoo.com/pipermail/hostap/2008-June/017908.html
[PATCH v2] wext: handle mode switches correctly for mac80211 -
http://lists.shmoo.com/pipermail/hostap/2008-June/017907.html

According to the following changelog, the two mac80211 patches has been
incorporated into the mainline kernel by 2.6.25.6-1:
http://lists.rpath.org/pipermail/foresight-commits/2008-June/024368.html

The wpa_supplicant patches seemed to have been applied since version 0.6.3-2
(https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wpasupplicant):
  * Add 52_handle_mac80211_mode_switch.patch to enhance handling of mode
switching for mac80211 using interfaces.
  * Add 53_give_adhoc_assoc_more_time.patch to give adhoc associations a bit
more time.

Thus, it would be very interesting to hear if this problem persists in
the current Intrepid development version (it oughtn't...)! Do we have
any brave Intrepid tester that can confirm or approve that these patches
have fixed the issue?

-
  Hi,

I am trying to create a new wireless network (particularly, with no
encryption) with the gnome applet. However, I just get the message
"Trying to connect to wireless network «(null)»". Then, after a couple
of minutes or so, it gets back to the cabled connection and no wireless
  connection is created.

I am using Gutsy, network-manager 0.6.5-0ubuntu16.7.10.0 and network-
- manager-gnome 0.6.5-0ubuntu11~7.10.0. My wireless card is an Intel
- PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection. Anyway I have been trying since
- Edgy, with no success.
+ manager-gnome 0.6.5-0ubuntu11~7.10.0.

  Thank you,

  Rafa
+
+ Updated description: The original reporter used ipw2200, but for that driver
a bug has already been reported for this isse: Bug #75358.
+ This bug now addresses users with mac20811-based drivers, since the majority
of the commenters have such cards/drivers.

Note about hardware: On my old laptop using ipw2200 (on which I haven't
watched the messages log during an attempt), it could be related to the

on an XPS M1330 using the Santa Rosa Intel Wireless Chipset (unsure of
which one it is but someone mentioned chipset Intel 4965 AGN on
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=743660).

[Bug 183303] Re: Can't create new wireless network

2008-03-27 Thread rihasant
Same problems appears here also. Using rtl8187 card.
This is what iwconfig exports while creating unencrypted network:

wmaster0 no wireless extensions.

wlan0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:"vm-tesmachine"
  Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
  Tx-Power=27 dBm
  Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr=2346 B
  Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
  Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

... and after it fails:

wmaster0 no wireless extensions.

wlan0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:""

  Tx-Power=27 dBm

Hi there
do you still experience this issue with the current version of the

Thanks in advance
