[Bug 1837440] Re: linux firmware 1.178.3 seems to break WPA enterprise
I have investigated a bit further. - Using a USB wifi adapter (took me some time to force one to use only the 2.4 GHz band as my laptop wifi adapter) I can always connect properly, so the issue is restricted to the intel card I have in my laptop. This should exclude wpasupplicant and network-manager. - The card in the laptop occasionally works correctly. This is why I originally got the impression that downgrading the linux-firmware package was restoring correct behavior (in fact, it was just by chance that I probably got the correct behavior). - When the card misfunctions, I get wild oscillations in the reported signal quality. Specifically, while the card is just scanning the nearby APs, I see a good quality for the WPA enterprise AP. During the connection attempt, the quality starts to fluctuate close to 0. My guess is that most likely something is starting to fail in the wifi module or that there is an issue with its power saving control. The latter could be kernel dependent, but given the update history, it seems unlikely to me. I'll check better. In the meantime, thanks for the help and advice. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1837440 Title: linux firmware 1.178.3 seems to break WPA enterprise To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1837440/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1837440] Re: linux firmware 1.178.3 seems to break WPA enterprise
If it is a regression due to recent updates then trying to isolate which package caused the regression may be the best way to start. You can check /var/log/apt/history.log* to try and determine what packages were upgraded around the time you started experiencing issues. The most likely candidates are probably linux, wpasupplicant, or network-manager. I'm going to change the affected task to linux for now, then if you run 'apport-collect 1837440' in a terminal your system will attach logs which may be relevant to this bug report. Try to do it after you've been experiencing the connection issues, without rebooting. I know that this can be tricky when the problem is with networking -- perhaps you can connect to a different network or use a wired connection. ** Package changed: linux-firmware (Ubuntu) => linux (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1837440 Title: linux firmware 1.178.3 seems to break WPA enterprise To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1837440/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1837440] Re: linux firmware 1.178.3 seems to break WPA enterprise
Yes, that is probably the case and it was probably just by chance that after downgrading the firmware I managed connecting for a couple of times consecutively. Now, I cannot connect again and the only reliable way of connecting seems to be by letting the mobile phone connect and using cable or bluetooth tethering from android :-< The problem is that the messages from Network manager are pure nonsense: The applet hangs on "configuring the interface" for some time (which I believe means it cannot complete the association and then it errors out with "The interface cannot be found" or "No secrets were provided". Also the systems log do not seem to provide any information on what part of the negotiation is going wrong. All this has started in the week beginning with Jul 15th and the local network administrators here say that nothing has changed on their side (also phones, window and apple computers can connect properly), so the issue must be on my side and must follow some package update on my system or some fault in my wifi card (but this seems strange because I can connect to regular/non enterprise networks). Any hint at trying to debug? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1837440 Title: linux firmware 1.178.3 seems to break WPA enterprise To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware/+bug/1837440/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1837440] Re: linux firmware 1.178.3 seems to break WPA enterprise
There haven't been any updates to the firmware for your wireless hardware since 1.178, so it seems unlikely that the linux-firmware update would be responsible. Let's see how your testing turns out though.
