I can't recall which of these may have corresponded with having to use the power off button on the laptop. $ ls -la /var/crash total 20144 drwxrwsrwt 2 root whoopsie4096 Jul 27 07:36 . drwxr-xr-x 14 root root4096 Apr 16 13:10 .. -rw-r- 1 dean whoopsie 5103430 Jul 26 21:24 _opt_brave.com_brave_brave.1000.crash -rw-rw-r-- 1 dean whoopsie 0 Jul 26 21:24 _opt_brave.com_brave_brave.1000.upload -rw--- 1 whoopsie whoopsie 37 Jul 26 21:25 _opt_brave.com_brave_brave.1000.uploaded -rw-r- 1 dean whoopsie 6644240 Jul 26 22:13 _opt_teamviewer_tv_bin_TeamViewer.1000.crash -rw-rw-r-- 1 dean whoopsie 0 Jul 26 22:13 _opt_teamviewer_tv_bin_TeamViewer.1000.upload -rw--- 1 whoopsie whoopsie 37 Jul 26 22:13 _opt_teamviewer_tv_bin_TeamViewer.1000.uploaded -rw-r- 1 dean whoopsie 8851664 Jul 26 21:23 _usr_bin_gnome-control-center.1000.crash -rw-rw-r-- 1 dean whoopsie 0 Jul 26 21:23 _usr_bin_gnome-control-center.1000.upload -rw--- 1 whoopsie whoopsie 37 Jul 26 21:24 _usr_bin_gnome-control-center.1000.uploaded -Original Message- From: boun...@canonical.com On Behalf Of Chris Guiver Sent: Friday, July 26, 2019 11:42 PM To: dean.w.schu...@gmail.com Subject: [Bug 1838122] Re: Opening the Settings dialog locks the desktop Can you please provide a `ls -la /var/crash` as the file names themselves tell us what crashes occurred (inc. when), which is more than we have currently. Do the 'times' of the .crash files correspond to when you're likely to have hit the 'power' button to force-shutdown? or if unsure just respond you can't recall. [Bug 1838122] Re: Opening the Settings dialog locks the desktop
Running ubuntu-bug on the .crash file in /var/crash gave an internal error popup. Trying your instructions on point 2 on this URL: https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/b3e0d3deed6257fc1b9ae70c24b2a09705d4bb29b1c4e2619a81359775c05b871501564c588e4ed7c7807dfaafe1dd95c6ecb2b3cd1f89744001cf8ffbb9266 shows a page with No Error on it. Looks like we've struck out on post mortem analysis. I installed the first upgrade and things are better. Maybe the update fixed the problem. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1838122 Title: Opening the Settings dialog locks the desktop To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1838122/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1838122] Re: Opening the Settings dialog locks the desktop
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. When you say you cannot shutdown except through power button? Have you tried [magic] sysrq keys to tell the kernel to safely shutdown? If you're unfamiliar with them, this may be useful - https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=617349, or to a lesser extent https://ubuntu.com/blog/prepare-for-when-ubuntu-freezes. Quoting from the first ubuntuforums post "In case of a freeze where you cannot do anything, simply press Alt+SysRq+R+S+E+I+U+B" (I refer you to the aforementioned link for details on how to key it) It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps: 1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run: ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug. 2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine. Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please send the links to us. 3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921, reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1. Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security risk for yourself. ps: I added [magic] before as I find it easier to find the sysrq keys in search engines by adding the word magic if I forget the actual key combination I want to use. ** Changed in: ubuntu Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1838122 Title: Opening the Settings dialog locks the desktop To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1838122/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

If you believe I'm in error (in last comment), please change status back to New, and just comment a reason why you believe it's valid.
