I created the user "testgnome" by typing "sudo adduser testgnome", and I was able to log into a gnome session from GDM with no visible problems. Also I could run gnome-settings-daemon in the account from the xterm set up by the "failsafe" setting. Any ideas what I can do to fix my user account?
