The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Karmic Koala. I have the same problem on a Ubuntu Hardy Alpha6 x64, on a Dell Inspiron 1525. the file is a jpeg image generated using a digital camera. The appropriate plugin is enabled.
