Public bug reported: This is a recent bug (last week or so). Fortunately a work around is to use https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/906/sound-output-device-chooser/ which works. I'm not sure this is the right package to put this bug report in. I mean the settings with the gear icon in Ubuntu 20.04. See the photo attached. When you select other options other than the default laptop speakers, you still get sound through the laptop speakers.
