@Sebastien Thank you for that info. Now I will know where to look when
playing with extensions in future.

I was looking in the wrong place for the defect. The issue is not in
the extension it's in the gnome-control-center.

I'll keep playing around. I've been using Linux for many years but I
develop Windows software for a living. This might be a good little side
project for me to start playing with Linux application development.

Thanks for all your help.

@Chris, the source is using javascript and not compiled, you can
probably simply copy your modified file over the one in /usr/share
/gnome-shell/extensions/ubuntu-d...@ubuntu.com/ and restart your session
to test your change

@Sebastien I tired to go a step further. I cloned the git repo for the
gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock. I found the line where the combobox
listener triggers the change for the active monitor selection. I added
the update to set the "multi-monitor" to "false" when the monitor
selection index is "0".

However I've have never done any development work with Ubuntu or Gnome
Shell before so after performing a "make" and "make install" I have no
idea how to install the extension update to try it out.

So I will just leave it to the Ubuntu team. I'll have to see if I can
find tutorials on gnome shell extension development for the future.

@Chris, thanks for the investigation and the comments, that's useful and
looks like an issue we should look at fixing before release

[Bug 1871358] Re: Dock shows on all displays even when you don't want it to (because all displays are the same model of monitor)

2020-04-09 Thread Chris McCutcheon
Thank you.

After reviewing the Dash-to-Dock code myself I discovered another
gsetting "multi-monitor". When "multi-monitor" is set to "true" the
"preferred-monitor" setting is ignored. Changing "multi-monitor" to
"false" has corrected the problem for me.

I am able to consistently reproduce the issue with Ubuntu 20.04.
Changing the "Show On" setting in the Appearance UI to "All Displays"
sets the "multi-monitor" option to "true" but when selecting a specific
monitor the setting UI never clears the "multi-monitor" setting.

Thanks, it means that's not an issue with the settings interface but
with the dock itself, could you report the issue upstream on
https://github.com/micheleg/dash-to-dock/issues ?

I did try logging out as well as restarting. After reboot I verified
the preferred-monitor setting was still set to the monitor I set it to
(which it is). But the Dock still persists on all three monitors.

[Bug 1871358] Re: Dock shows on all displays even when you don't want it to (because all displays are the same model of monitor)

2020-04-08 Thread Chris McCutcheon
Sorry I should have posted an additional comment yesterday. This is my
first Ubuntu bug posting.

I did try manually setting the preferred-monitor parameter:

   gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock preferred-
monitor 1

Then I verified the setting was changed:

  gsettings get org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock preferred-monitor

  returned 1

However the dock continues displaying on all 3 monitors. I also tried
setting monitor 2 and 3 but the same results.

As the setting is changed all the 3 docks experience a brief flicker but all
three docks remain.

Thank you for you bug report. Does it work/can you set it to one of the monitor
if you do?
$ gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock preferred-monitor
where n is the number of you monitor (you can try, 1, 2, 3)
