Public bug reported: Downloaded the daily build (2020 April 17) of Focal Fossa 20.04 and flashed it to a 64GB USB stick using the Ubuntu built-in program. The USB is correctly recognized but the BIOS cannot boot into GRUB. The screen goes black and after a second or so the boot device list is shown again.
ThinkPad info: Lenovo Carbon X1 6th UEFI BIOS Version: N23ET71 (1.46) UEFI BIOS Date: 2020-02-20 Embedded Controller Version: N23HT35W (1.20) ME Firmware Version: 11.8.70.3626 Machine Type Model: 20KHCT01WW CPU Type: Intel Core i7-8550U Installed memory: 16384MB Startup info: UEFI Secure Boot: Off UEFI/Legacy Boot: Both UEFI/Legacy Boot Priority: UEFI First CSM Support: Yes USB info: Partition type: GPT Model: Extreme GO USB 3.1 64GB Partition filesystem: FAT32 What I have tried to do: I tried both MBR and GPT partitions. I tried to use the built-in program to flash the USB. I tried to copy the ISO to the USB just using 7z. I tried to set UEFI/Legacy Boot to "Legacy only" or "UEFI only". I tried a different port. VERY IMPORTANT: the same USB stick and the same BIOS settings work for Ubuntu 18.04. What I expected to happen: that the GRUB menu is shown. What happened instead: black screen and then the boot device list is shown again. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: focal ** Description changed: Downloaded the daily build (2020 April 17) of Focal Fossa 20.04 and flashed it to a 64GB USB stick using the Ubuntu built-in program.
