[Bug 1876489] Re: Xorg freeze

2020-05-22 Thread Valdis Strautins
So I did install manjaro and did change to kernel 5.6.1.1.
It doesn't freeze.

I guess problem is with kernel, is it possible to use this kernel on ubuntu?
Thanks

[Bug 1876489] Re: Xorg freeze

2020-05-07 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Unfortunately no there is no other way right now. If your display server
is frozen then you also lose the ability to switch to other virtual
terminals, because the keyboard handling for that is the job of the
frozen display server.

We should also check this is really a Xorg bug and not a gnome-shell
bug. To test that we just need to know if you can still move the mouse
pointer during the freeze?

I don't think this is because of extensions, because I installed those today.
I will try thanks.

2020-05-07 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Oh, it seems you have some non-standard extensions installed too, like
gsconnect. Please UNINSTALL ALL non-Ubuntu extensions before proceeding
any further. We need to do this because so many bugs are caused by
extensions.

[Bug 1876489] Re: Xorg freeze

2020-05-07 Thread Daniel van Vugt
OK this looks like a proper freeze, meaning nothing has crashed and
nothing is logging about it. To move forward, please install 'openssh-
server' so you are able to log into the machine from another machine and
observe the freeze.

Please log in to the affected machine via ssh and during the freeze run:

  ps auxw > processes.txt

and send us the resulting text file.

While you are there please also run 'top' and check to see if any
processes are using high CPU.

2020-05-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks again. That one was only running for 15 seconds before the log
ended. I still can't see anything explaining it.

Were you able to log in before it happened or not? If not then maybe try
editing /etc/gdm3/custom.conf and uncomment the line:

  #WaylandEnable=false

so it is:

  WaylandEnable=false

Then reboot.

[Bug 1876489] Re: Xorg freeze

2020-05-06 Thread Valdis Strautins
Well, it is hard.
Because when it will freeze, then I will reboot, and about 95% it freezes again
on the login screen.
So I will need to reboot again and the result could be the same.

Thanks

[Bug 1876489] Re: Xorg freeze

2020-05-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. That's an interesting log because it ends one second after
booting (!), but shows no evidence of a freeze.

I suggest what to do next is to wait until a freeze happens while you're
using it. Then reboot and again run:

  journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt

Please try again and boot the machine normally without the kernel
parameters "recovery nomodeset" and reproduce a freeze. Then reboot in
recovery mode and run:
