can be worked around (suboptimally) by forcibly removing ~/.pulse* I have been unable to reproduce this symptom using vbox Ubuntu VMs for (default) gutsy-hardy, hardy-intrepid, or intrepid-jaunty. I also am using ext3 for /home and /tmp. I got the same problem after upgrading from Hardy to Intrepid Alpha-6 (currently using beta with latest updates). Sep 27 21:14:37 kmos pulseaudio[6340]: core-util.c: Failed to open configuration file '/home/kmos/.pulse/volume-restore.table': Permission denied When I start something to play.. example: audacious, it shows this error message at /var/log/messages. I checked the .pulse directory and volume-restore.table file doesn't exist.
