Its working now. Have the same problem on Debian Testing. If i install the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-71.86.04-pkg1.run version nvidia driver, the Desktop Effects dont work in KDE 4.0.1 . But if i install the version NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.07-pkg1.run it works. But have some problems in taskmanager with transparency. Desktop Effects not working in my fresh install of Hardy Alpha 4. It was working with kde 4.0.0, but not work with 4.0.1. I've found that when running xgl I get: unknown program name(11007)/ checkComposite: Plasma has an argb visual 0x8061ff8 23068673 unknown program name(11007)/ checkComposite: Plasma is COMPOSITE-less on 0x805b5b0 but when I disable xgl, plasma detects it can use composite (nvidia and xorg combo [http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_nVidia_GL_Desktop_Effects], has some extensions that allow xserver to render composite, but is SLOWER than XGL), but it works: unknown program name(11027)/ checkComposite: Plasma has an argb visual 0x8062eb0 27262977 unknown program name(11027)/ checkComposite: Plasma can use COMPOSITE for effects on 0x805b5b0 So, now I'm not using XGL, but it'd be nice to be able to use XGL to render the kde4 effects, as it is much more faster than the nvidia and xorg combo. Unfortunately, I'm still having problems, with todays(2008-02-20) latest updates/upgrades. Sorry, I forgot to specify, what I meant for not working. If I have Desktop Effects and xgl enabled, I can login, but the effects are not visible, as if Desktop Effects were disabled. Even if I try disabling and re-enabling the effects, no visual change is made, as if it were doing nothing. If I have Desktop Effects and xgl disabled, I can login, the effects are visible, but the desktop response is too slow. Before the update 2 days ago, I had xgl and desktop effects running without any grave problems.
