[Bug 190452] Re: Make sure people who try out Ubuntu will keep it

2008-02-19 Thread GustavoNarea
Hello, Matthew.

I'm not suggesting to encourage Ubuntu users to switch to Linux. :)

My suggestions are:
1.- For the Ubuntu Help Center: Encourage people to learn more about the
freedom-respectful system they are using, powered by Linux, and explained the
user-friendly way at getgnulinux.org. This way they will appreciate what they
have, and will also think twice (at the least) before switching back to Windows
if something doesn't work as they expected in Ubuntu.
2.- For the Ubuntu website: Encourage potential Ubuntu users to learn more
about Linux (and Freedomware in general) by visiting getgnulinux.org, so that
they could get the *real* facts about the Windows vs Linux issue.

Cheers.

[Bug 190452] Re: Make sure people who try out Ubuntu will keep it

2008-02-18 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
The getgnulinux.org site is nicely done, but I don't think it has
anything to do with making sure people who try out Ubuntu will keep
it.

Linux and GNU software are important components in Ubuntu, and anyone
who wants to get involved in Ubuntu development will soon learn about
both of them. But many people who use Ubuntu will not encounter them,
and there's no reason they should need to. So for Ubuntu to encourage
them to Switch to Linux would be confusing: I've only just switched to
Ubuntu, and now Ubuntu wants me to switch to something else?

2008-02-11 Thread GustavoNarea
Matthew: Such section is still there: https://help.ubuntu.com/7.10
/about-ubuntu/C/index.html

Unless I'm wrong, those documents are included in the documentation that
ships Ubuntu (I'm not sure, I use Kubuntu).

By the way, on https://help.ubuntu.com/7.10/about-ubuntu/C/about-
linux.html you mention the Linux kernel and link to its website, but I
think it's irrelevant for newcomers; I think www.getgnulinux.org would
be really useful for them.

[Bug 190452] Re: Make sure people who try out Ubuntu will keep it

2008-02-11 Thread Matthew East
The Ubuntu Help Center is used for information about how to use Ubuntu,
rather than information about Ubuntu - we removed About Ubuntu from it
some time ago. I'm going to close the ubuntu-docs flags on this bug. It
may be a valid bug for the website though.

[Bug 190452] Re: Make sure people who try out Ubuntu will keep it

2008-02-09 Thread GustavoNarea
Nattgew, yes, that's what I mean.

I didn't set it to the Ubuntu Documentation because this might also come
in handy for www.ubuntu.com, to point people who want to learn more
about Linux.

** Summary changed:

- Make sure people who tries out Ubuntu, will install and will always use it
+ Make sure people who try out Ubuntu will keep it

** Description changed:

Some people try out Ubuntu, but won't install it and use it. Sometimes
- eye-candyness and user-friendliness are not enough.
-
- If they knew how important GNU/Linux is, and Freedomware in general,
- most of them would stick to it.
+ eye-candyness and user-friendliness are not enough. If they knew how
+ important GNU/Linux is, and Freedomware in general, most of them would
+ stick to it.

For this reason, I find it useful for the Ubuntu community to support
www.getgnulinux.org, a website maintained by the non-profit that takes
care of Freedomware marketing. For example, you have the Ubuntu Help
Center and the About Ubuntu applications, where you might point
newcomers to getgnulinux.org if they want to learn about Linux.

This was partially fixed for Kubuntu in Bug #107062.
