Hi Daniel - unplugging the phone has proven to resolve the problem. I have had to use the laptop to charge the phone on my trip hence this never showing up as an issue before - I have set show-mounts to false also and will see if this fixes it with the phone connected... or are the two situations not related?? Thanks for the logs. The first thing I suspect is those PTP errors coming from gvfsd. They might be triggered by having a phone or camera plugged into the computer. And that might freeze the GUI if you have a shell extension trying to access such mounts. On this occurring today again I checked the crash log as recommended, no new files had been created - however, the issue may not be crashing - I entered my password and the system halts / freezes. I walked away and after a few minutes the system logged back in again - so there is a huge delay in logging in it seems.
