You can install the pidgin-extprefs package which enables this option. BUT! It does not work... I am totally agree. It is incredible that today does not have this option. This is one of my must-have gnome features, I use this with Ekiga (which already has this option). I have the same problem. I think that when you close Pidgin with right click it save the position, than maximize and than close. If it is closed by event it only maximize and than close. According me must to be managed the closing routine. Pidgin should remember whether it quits minimized or maximized. In the pidgin-forum it is assumed that it is because shutting down causes Pidgin to maximize the buddy-window before shutdown. But that's not the issue I think, because when quitting the app via rightclick on systrayicon Pidgin maximizes the buddywindow as well but remembers minimized status at application-restart.
