As far as I can tell with both alsamixer and gnome-alsamixer, nothing is
muted, and the necessary channels are turned on.
My apologies for the lengthy, awkward initial post. I am horribly lacking
in skill at the command line- I would have to say that most of my
difficulties with non functional commands were directly related to user
error (never had to run a script before, etc.). I think I have what you
need now. The files you need are attached. If I have omitted anything, or
posted anything in error, please advise me as to what I should do- I'm
always willing to learn! Thanks again!

Can you specify which commands did not work among the ones specified in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems ? Were you able to see
the alsamixer control in the terminal on typing `alsamixer`? Else try
gnome-alsamixer. You have to make sure nothing is muted and required
channels are turned on. Please specify which commands worked and which
didn't and any output you obtain on the screen when you try to execute
them. Thanks in advance.

Status in Source Package alsa-driver in Ubuntu: Incomplete
Bug description:
Please forgive any missing/useless information- this is my first bug
report. I tried to follow the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems, but not all of the
commands they had listed worked.
I started with a fresh Ubuntu 7.10 install on a Gateway T-1625 laptop with
a radeon x1200 series audio controller and had no sound. Everything else-
including 3D graphics seems to be working fine so far. I tried using the
comprehensive sound problem solutions guide on the Ubuntu forums (
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449) to include downloading
the latest version of ALSA (1.0.16) and compiling it from source, but I
remain without audio.
