I'm still experiencing a grey box at http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml . Setup is Intrepid 8.10 x86-64 install, firefox 3.0.7+nobinonly- 0ubuntu0.8.10.1, openjdk-6-jre 6b12-0ubuntu6.1, icedtea6-plugin 6b12-0ubuntu6.1. For me the Java applet works now! There's a grey box only, and in the status bar: "starting applet...". (NB: It does not make a difference whether i have the nvidia driver (from restricted modules) activated or not. Visual effects are disabled.) Starting Firefox from console reveals "initializing JNLPRuntime..." as the last line. Then, nothing more happens. I get the exact same error output at Lorant on the same platform (Hardy 64) with the same icedtea plugin. Some applets will load, but others will not. Hi, I can confirm this problem with 64bit Hardy. I can see a grey box only, and in the status bar: "starting applet" in case of http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml and "Started: applet not initialized" in some other cases. I use the 64 bit firefox3, with nvidia driver (from restricted modules) and compiz enabled. Please let me know if you need further info. Just to add. I think I can nail down the problem a bit more. I had an older version of java installed on my Gutsy install, and tried to install a new version. Firefox prompted me to install about 4 different things. The only one that works in the official Sun Java plugin. I am having the same problem with Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon, Firefox 2.0.0.12, and IcedTea Java7 (and the plugin.) MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz 2GB 667MHz RAM nVidia GeForce 8600M GT (using nvidia-glx-new drivers) For every Java applet that I have ever come across, it shows up as a gray box.
