I am having a similar problem with my screen dimming to lowest setting. It seems to be random but other times it is caused by starting an application such as a basic gnome-game or Second Life. I did notice that it dimmed upon bootup at the stage "loading VESA state" Perhaps it's a vesa bug? I have an Acer Aspire 7720 widescreen notebook. Currently using 2.6.24-19-generic running LinuxMint. Same problem here with Hardy completely patched on a Thinkpad R52. Screen dims randomly when connected to the AC and goes back a bit when I press the mouse, but it goes back only to the 50% or so. I have to manually increase the brightness after that. It dims after 10 seconds of not pressing any key, sometimes less. Gutsy was working properly. I just read a comment of someone having a Dell Inspiron 9300 and the screen dimming randomly, even when working. I had the same problem. It is not the same :-( It dimms the screen quite quick and does not wait the amount of time specified in the settings. Even when the computer is in use again it should go back to what is was but it does not it constantlly sets the brightness down to 40%. in the settings I have it at 100%.. I had the same problem, but then I noticed that it's a UI inconsistency problem. The slider under AC power tab has the opposite meaning of the slider under Battery tab. Maybe it's just this, maybe it's something else.
