I deleted smb.conf and it did the same, so not it. I think its a live bug. While updating my 64 bit, I got a message asking if I want to use package maintainer samba file. Not knowing better and since it was the default, I accepted. I cannot now boot into the Desktop though I can log into an fail safe xterm. The problem seems to affect the 32 bit version of Hardy. I do not know what changed but the Samba updates are working on my system now.
