GMT and UTC aren't the exact same, even if you ingore the summer-time (leap seconds). Further UTC is the international standard. Perhaps TZ isn't the right approach here: the self help for Coick 2.22.2 claims General/Panel DIsplay a UTC clock type: Use UTC: Select this option to display Universal Coordinated Time, also known as Greenwich Mean Time, in the applet. However, I note that when I use Preferences in Clock 2.22.2, General/Panel Display doesn't offer the UTC option. As a temporary workaround, you can use the timezone Atlantic/Reykjavik, which is on GMT year-round.
