I use Pidgin 2.4.1, I have this bug too. Thank you for showing me the status.xml file path (I was seeking a .pindgin folder rather than a .purple). No, you can do it from Nautilus or your favorite text editor. Although I would make sure Pidgin is closed when you do it to ensure your changes don't get overwritten.
