Once "Login Window" (finally) starts, it then starts as quickly as expected subsequently, until reboot. Some other things take longer than expected to start too, for example Firefox takes about 20 seconds to start on my 3 GHz Core2duo machine with 2 GB RAM and a fast hard disk. Have installed Hardy finale on 5 machines so far and this bug appears on every one of them. System > Administration > Login Window will hang for 3 to 5 min whether I start it from the GUI or if I start it from the command line. I confirm this bug. For me it happend with the Hardy RC as well as with a perfectly fresh installation of the final Hardy Heron. In every case it seems to happen only the first time you open that preferences window. That took more than 5 minutes for me. I was running 7.10 i386 version on an AMD 64 because of the lack of 64-bit Java (yes I have tried all the workarounds and they don't help me with Hushmail java applet). After upgrading from 7.10 (i386) to 8.04 (i386) I experienced the reported problem with launching Login Window. The HDD light flicks rapidly, the "starting Login Window" icon on the bottom panel disappears, and the HDD light continues to clicker. After a minute or two I shut down the machine to stop it. Have done this twice, same outcome. It's very long to launch (about 1min). At launch cursor is set to the "time wit" icon, but after 15sec it's set to the arrow. So user don't know what's happen, why gdmsetup is not launched. Only Geeks ;-) that looks at hdd led activity can see that something is working hard. After that gdmsetup pop up. Each launch of gdmsetup is quick after that. The bug seems to apear only on the very first time using gdmsetup. I can confirm, this happens to me as well. I forgot I even clicked the login window icon and it appeared minutes later.
