I have the same problem: System > Administration > Login Window > [Admin. Password] > program flickers on briefly and crashes (just vanishes without trace from the screen). Login Window control panel does not stay on the screen, no matter how many times I try to invoke it. Running sudo gdmsetup from Terminal causes the same result, with the message "Segmentation fault" in Terminal. Hardy with either kernel 2.6.20-16-generic or kernel 2.6.24-16-generic, GNOME 2.22.2 This started happening after I had tried to fix the Sound in kernel 2.6.24-16.
