[Bug 210690] Re: Sorting in ooffice calc

2008-05-24 Thread Abubakar Gurnah
Hi Stephan Schnitzer!

No problem for the delay.

Nice idea, may be I will download the source code for ooffice calc and
see what I can do. I have some experience with java, and I have a plugin
in my IDE for OOffice so I will see what I can come up with ;)

Thanks Stephan (Y)

[Bug 210690] Re: Sorting in ooffice calc

2008-05-23 Thread Stephan Schnitzer
Hi Abubakar Gurnah ,

sorry for the delay.
You are right, using your example, MS Office 2003 ask if it should expand the
selection and sort the whole sheet.
This is a new feature, using MS Office 2000 no popup dialog appears.

Summarization: OpenOffice behaves exactly like MS Office 2000.

To my experience, almost all users of MS Excel know that they have to select a
single cell if they want to sort all columns. So the new feature in MSO 2003 is
only interesting to users that are new to Excel.
There is no simple answer if this dialog is an improvement, because users that
want to select only a single column always have to click this new dialog away.

I would not want such a dialog. However I agree that the behaviour of Excel
2000 and oocalc is anything but intuitive and therefore the dialog would be a
help for beginners.
A compromise would be to add the dialog to oocalc but include a toggle box
Never ask again.

[Bug 210690] Re: Sorting in ooffice calc

2008-05-06 Thread Abubakar Gurnah
Hi Stephan Schnitzer!

I am using office Excel 2003, Let me put it brief.

A B C D
a 2 1 4
v 8 6 4
z 3 6 9
f 7 7 4
g 32 78 0

Assume A, B, C, and are the columns.

If I sort by Col A, in oocalc only A is sorted and not the other
columns, and if let say column B, C and D are data related to A. Then
the data wont be consistence to each other, the integrity is gone. I
hope you understand what I am saying.

In excel if you sort like this, a popup dialog appear asking you to sort
the other cell. I have attach the JPEG from excel function in the way I
am trying to define, the excel is version 2003

[Bug 210690] Re: Sorting in ooffice calc

2008-05-05 Thread Stephan Schnitzer
The current behaviour of oocalc is the same as in MS Excel (at least up to
version 2003). Calc (and Excel too) is no database and therefore doesn't keep
rows together in any circumstances.
If you want to sort a single column, click the column (e.g. A) and then the
sort button.
If you want to sort all columns, you can either select a single cell and click
the sort button, or - if you want to sort by more than 1 column - you can
select Data-Sort from the menu.

Abubakar, you said that Excel asks how to sort. What version of Excel
do you use? Is it 2007? I used from 97 up to 2003 and I cannot remember
any question about what to sort.

I personally would perfer the current behaviour. Maybe it's not very
intuitive, but it is what Excel and OOCalc users are used to.

[Bug 210690] Re: Sorting in ooffice calc

2008-04-03 Thread Abubakar Gurnah
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
-From the sample I attached, I have two column, I wanted to sort the
second column, I highlighter the second column and click sort desc, but only
one column get sorted, and not the other.

2. the behavior you expected, and
   - The behavior i expected from the system, is to ask me if the record have
a relation issue with the other columns, If yes all the column get sorted,
according to the selected column. Like excel if you sort one column it give you
a pop up asking the sorting with expand... something like that.

3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
-The behavior i encountered is only one column is sorted, and i have to
drag or insert another column in the first column (A), just to sort it.

I hope you understand.

[Bug 210690] Re: Sorting in ooffice calc

2008-04-02 Thread mcas
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively [WWW] http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd
be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the
problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at [WWW]
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

 At a minimum, we need:
 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
 2. the behavior you expected, and
 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
 Thanks!

Which ooffice version are you using? Which ubuntu version do you use?
