exaclty right 85% **only ** alternate cd seems broken. 85 % of the installation is achieved only. gconf2 metacity schemas gnome-games will not load/install !! I'm installing on a IBM t43 via pxe boot. expert mode & normal mode do exactly the same thing. I have a similar problem. Using the 8.04 x86 alternate CD (as opposed to amd64 in the original post), I was trying to install with encrypted partition in one LVM volume. The installer crashes while "selecting and installing software" at 85%. I've had it happen twice now.
