@Luke Yelavich Yes, I am aware that you can record from CD-ROM digitally. However, this bug is about the inability to use CD/AUX analog input on some boards. I confirm JoePub's workaround on Lucid with alsa-driver 1.0.22.1+dfsg- 0ubuntu3. Output from 'arecord -l' and 'amixer' available from my bug at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/620891/+attachment/1502487/+files/noCDinput1.txt Bug seems to be specific to ALC889A (and probably only this board series). Will try on Maverick when time allows. The workaround seems to be a proper solution for such a specific issue. Tried using HG version of alsa which still did not work. It seems the auto configuring of the available HDA widgets from the BIOS is not working on the GA-MA78GM-S2H. I think I may have found the problem. The current ubuntu repository version of alsa-driver uses the ALC882 patch for patch_realtek.c in the hda driver, but the latest HG repository has added a section to the patch_alc882 function to call patch_alc883 if the chip revision is the ALC889A as the ALC889A has better compatibility with 883 than 882. I haven't had chance to compile the HG version of alsa-driver yet but will do so over the weekend. If that doesn't solve the problem, then I think a specific board configuration may need to be setup in patch_realtek.c for the Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H as BIOS auto configuration may not be working from this board.
