[Bug 221504] Re: Gaming/Video instability in Hardy (x freezes), starting after 8.04-rc and before 8.04.0 [946GZ]

2009-01-22 Thread Bryce Harrington

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the
original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to
reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against
the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we
may be able to pass upstream for help.

Could you test against intrepid (either a livecd or installation) and
see if the problem still exists there?

[Bug 221504] Re: Gaming/Video instability in Hardy (x freezes) [946GZ]

2008-07-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hmm, there weren't any major changes to the -intel driver between -rc
and the release. The only patch that went in around this time was:

  * debian/patches/17_lockup_virtual_size_2048.patch:
- merging patch from http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13376.
Fixes crash if Virtual set to 2048 by disabling DRI in this case,
prior to initializing the DRI subsystem. (closes LP: #188178)

but I wouldn't think this could cause the problem you're reporting.

The xserver did have a relevant change in this timeframe though:

  * debian/patches/165_fedora_xserver-1.5.0-xaa-option-inversion.patch:
- Turn XAA Offscreen Pixmaps off by default, and use
XaaOffscreenPixmaps true to turn them on. This setting was an
early pre-EXA HW optimization attempt that didn't pan out; upstream is
deprecating XAA in favor of EXA generally, and for situations where
XAA is still in use recommends NOT using this optimization hack, since
they found it often just made performance worse, and sometimes created
visualization bugs. People wishing to gain added performance should be
experimenting with EXA anyway, not this setting. (closes LP: #182038)

 -- Bryce Harrington [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mon, 21 Apr 2008 12:30:53 -0700

Can you try setting XaaOffscreenPixmaps true to see if it makes any
difference?

Another change that occurred somewhat earlier was the switch from -i810
to -intel as the default driver. Do you recall if you were using the
i810 driver previously? If so, you could test seeing if going back to
i810 makes the instability go away. (We would still need to figure
out what the issue was, but this could explain why you suddenly started
seeing it at this point in the release.)

Please also test Intrepid if you could, so we can see if the problem has
been resolved in the latest code; if not we'll want to report this
upstream.

As well, try getting a backtrace so we can see where things are stuck -
see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for directions.

Attaching xorg.0.log.old

** Summary changed:

- Gaming instability in Hardy
+ Gaming/Video instability in Hardy

** Description changed:

- I have gaming instability after the most recent upgrade (from 8.04 beta
- to 8.04 STABLE)
+ X freezes when I play games or watch videos.

- Games like OpenArena freeze. No error message, no anything. My computer
- just freezes and only hard reboot (the button RESET) solves the problem.
+ Versions of Ubuntu that didn't have the issue: Ubuntu 8.04 RC-1 (which was
released just one week before the stable version)
+ How to reproduce: If you have an integrated Intel video (Intel 946GZ) you
just have to play a game or watch a video for 10-15 minutes and X will freeze.

- Intel video: 946GZ
+ Ctrl+Alt+F1 doesn't take me to a console
+ Ctrl+Alt+Backtrace doesn't restart X
+ The mouse pointer doesn't move
+ The keyboard LED for Caps Lock and Scroll lock start blinking at regular
intervals
