All of my filesystems are ext3. It could indeed be a local config issue.. I upgraded from 7.10, and there are quite a few things that are causing me issues that don't seem to be a problem on my laptop's clean install of 8.04. Notes RE: other bug reports: 1) Bug 61817: I believe this bug is distinct from 61817 as the regeneration of thumbnails occurs regardless of whether using symbolic links or not 2) Bug 204434: I believe this bug is distinct from 204434 as this occurs regardless of zoom level.
