[Bug 228020] Re: Sound playback doesn't work after suspend/restart in Hardy
Try nudging the volume for Master and PCM by just a little bit. Make sure the volume controls change, this seems to force the volume to be synced to hw. If that doesn't work, try nudging all volume controls. Somehow, on my Thinkpad, I have to do this in 30% of the cases after a suspend. Yeah, I've tried volume, mute keys, etc. Nothing helps except the force- reload described two comments above. -- Sound playback doesn't work after suspend/restart in Hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/228020 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

yes for me sometimes it works with pulseaudio -k pulseaudio -D, but sometimes I need to go the harder way to bring it back. :-) sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils stop sudo rmmod snd_hda_intel (your driver might be different) sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel (your driver might be different) sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils start -- Sound playback doesn't work after suspend/restart in Hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/228020 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 228020] Re: Sound playback doesn't work after suspend/restart in Hardy
The link from the previous comment is from a support thread about a Thinkpad laptop. I have an Everex laptop, not a Thinkpad, but I did try their suggestions. The relevant items: a) use /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart This didn't work on my laptop. b) Mute the pcm volume and after that the master volume, the sound will shows up again (the order is not important) This didn't work on my laptop. c) Switch the sound system from Autotdetect to ALSA in the PreferencesSoundsDevices menu. My laptop was already set up that way, so this didn't help. d) Look at Bug #198218 One suggesion in there was ty try: sudo /sbin/alsa force-reload This did get sound running again. But it looks like it unloads and reloads all ALSA-related modules, which also would kill everything using sound. Fairly extreme, but it does work. But should that be necessary? -- Sound playback doesn't work after suspend/restart in Hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/228020 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 228020] Re: Sound playback doesn't work after suspend/restart in Hardy
On Bug #223061, someone asked me to try /etc/init.d/alsa-utils reset -- but thsi had no effect on my problem. Here's what I did: 1. Reboot 2. Play the ubuntu Sax.ogg example file (which came with Ubuntu) to verify that sound is working. 3. Suspend using the Gnome desktop menu item. 4. Restart by hitting the space bar. 5. Try to play the sound again -- no sound is coming out. 6. Issue sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils reset command. Screen says * Resetting ALSA... [OK] 7. Try playing the sound again -- no sound is coming out. I hadn't noticed the above suggestion (maybe I didn't get the email?), but I just also tried sudo pulseaudio -k I got a message saying: E: main.c: Failed to kill daemon. So I guess I am not using pulseaudio? I have no idea what pulseaudio is, so unless it is being used by default, I probably wasn't using it. Any other suggestions, I'd be glad to try...

OK, here is what I've found: * After a reboot, there is a /usr/bin/pulseaudio process running under my user name. It is apparently not running as a daemon, because my configuration had daemonize = no in it (as reported by pulseauido --dump-conf). * After suspend/restart, this process is still there, but sound doesn't work. * I can kill this process, and sound still doesn't work. * I can then restart a pulseaudio process by running pulseaudio --D, but sound doesn't come back. * I also tried logging out/in (which also killed pulseaudio and restarted as non-daemon process), but sound didn't come back. * For a second run, I rebooted, killed the pulseaudio process, and tested sound, which works fine without pulseaudio running (I also verified no pulseaudio process was started when I started playing the sound). * Then I did a suspend/restart. * No pulseaudio process reappeared. Sound does not work. * Starting pulseaudio didn't help either. From this set of tests, I don't think pulseaudio is probably the problem... Are you using pulseaudio? If yes try to stop pulseaudio and start it again, worked for me pulseaudio -k pulseaudio -D -- Sound playback doesn't work after suspend/restart in Hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/228020 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
