Re: [Bug 229716] Re: Firefox crashes for no reason + lost Ubuntu 8 Panel

2009-01-20 Thread Bill
Martin,
I took 8.04 off of my machines due to this and many other instability
issues. So far there are no issues with 8.10. I have it installed on 4
machines. 3 are rather new and one is an old P-II, 400.

Regards,
Bill

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue
for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

[Bug 229716] Re: Firefox crashes for no reason + lost Ubuntu 8 Panel

2008-09-22 Thread Yann
I confirm this bug: Some web sites seems to hang firefox 3 and in the
same time, upper panel (from which firefox is started) of up to date
8.04.1 is lost. After initial problem, every firefox launch was causing
upper panel to dissapear.

I had to reinstall all firefox stuff (itself, gnome-support...) to have
it work again...

2008-09-17 Thread Nteeks
Hi Bill,

Thanks for your reply.

Re: Monitor
I find that my CPU will run at 100% for long periods of time &
everything slows to a crawl.
Also Ubuntu sucks down the memory something fierce.

I've run Linspire 6 & the memory & Cpu usage are much lower.

Right now my memory is down to 73 MB out of 2 GB...
I usually start off with 1540 MBs or so & then it rapidly drops.'

After opening Thunderbird Mail with 14 email entities & a Firefox
window or 2 I'm down to 1100 MB before starting to browse or write, etc.

The memory usage is as bad as MS Win XP.

Linspire 6 will start out at 1700 MB and drop more slowly with use.
When I close something out it will jump up a bit.

Any suggestions?

Re: [Bug 229716] Re: Firefox crashes for no reason + lost Ubuntu 8 Panel

2008-08-27 Thread Bill
I was told not to install the default flash player several distros ago and
to install Adobe flash player. This solved the instability problem with all
but 8.04. 8.04 is unstable whether or not FireFox is running.

The latest upgrade of FireFox in 7.10 is also unstable. I am working on
that problem in a similar way you are working on it. Worst problem with the
latest FireFox in 7.10 is that for no reason the browser will lock up not
only itself, but the entire system.

Running a system monitor I find no reason since CPU usage on either core is
always about 2 to 7 percent.

[Bug 229716] Re: Firefox crashes for no reason + lost Ubuntu 8 Panel

2008-08-27 Thread Roberto Innocenti
The problem look like is connected with flash player and pulseaudio,
I have checked with "strace firefox" that after crash firefox is blocked on
file /tmp/.esd-1001,
that i have deleted and firefox restart to work and all gnome work normal
except for sound that doesnt work.

I have restarted even pulseaudio "/etc/init.d/pulseaudio restart" , but the
audio doesn't coming back
I have installed, following the indication https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio ,
sudo apt-get install libflashsupport .
At the end I have decide to uninstall pulseaudio, when I do that on synaptic he
ask me to uninstall even ubuntu-desktop, don't worry about that, after I have
restarted ubuntu and the audio continue working, probably using alsa, so now
I'll check if firefox will crash again crashing even gnome

Re: [Bug 229716] Re: Firefox crashes for no reason + lost Ubuntu 8 Panel

2008-08-21 Thread Bill
My install crashed more frequently with 8.04 and when it crashed I could do
nothing until I killed power on the computer and rebooted.

I have had one crash since updating FireFox in 7.10. Recovery in 7.10 is
from Konsole or just opening a terminal window and killing any associated
applications running with FireFox. There used to be a problem with
flashplayer in FireFox, but I have not seen that problem for over a year.

2008-08-21 Thread Roberto Innocenti
What crash is not all Ubuntu, but in particolare Gnome.
For example virtual gnome console If I start remain waiting.
If I open xterm or konsole they work perfectly.
Even restarting gdm the problem remain /etc/init.d/gdm restart

[Bug 229716] Re: Firefox crashes for no reason + lost Ubuntu 8 Panel

2008-08-20 Thread Roberto Innocenti
I have upgradated from 7.10 to Ubuntu 8.04,

One time every 8-9 hours using Ubuntu with Firefox 3 open and using it Firefox
crash opening a Pop Up windows and after that Ubuntu is not able to open a
virtual consol nor a restart via gnome interface itself.
I must open open with CTRL+ALT+F1 the real console and type sudo restart.

Firefox 3 is with firebug, GoogleToolbar, WebDeveloper

The same happen at my collegue that have Ubuntu 7.10, for him is less
frequently the problem

[Bug 229716] Re: Firefox crashes for no reason + lost Ubuntu 8 Panel

2008-08-13 Thread Bill
I've had the same problem with no apparent fix. Finally I quit running
8.04. Unfortunately with the last Firefox update for 7.10 the problem
also happens occasionally with 7.10 now.

I can be doing almost anything on the internet and suddenly nothing.
Blank screen and nothing. I have Centrino Duo running at 1.66 GHz, with
1Gb RAM on a Toshiba U2005 notebook. So far the problem has not shown
up on my Dell Optiplex on any distro.

Another problem since Firefox 3.0 is the Toshiba will reboot on its own
sometimes when Firefox is open.
