I got the same problem. This is very annoying because you are losing your work if is not saved... I can't tell you what is the problem, but I manage to replicate the method that makes the gnome to crash. You must have firefox with a webpage that have flash, and another program (in my case the console). If I minimize the firefox window several times ... the gnome crashes... Please follow these instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit.
