This might be a stupid question, but have you tried using the function
keys to cycle through your laptop's monitor modes?

Are you able to drop down to a tty on the laptop to restart X, or have
you been restarting X over SSH?

PPS: same bug with KDE4 (same computers).
I guess it is a problem of X or the xserver-xorg-intel graphic drivers. I hope 
this will be fixed soon, because I pretty bad
