kimus, thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Maverick reached EOL on April 10, 2012. See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases Is this an issue in a supported release? If so, could you please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal: apport-collect 234292 Please ensure you have xdiagnose installed, and that you click the Yes button for attaching additional debugging information. [Bug 234292] Re: laptop video output garbage
More info, if it helps: -I used to experience the blink problem addressed in 164589. This no longer happens, so the setting certainly helped with that. -When using my computer at work, where I use two external monitors, I have never had the screen garbage problem. It only happens when I am at home and running with the laptop screen alone. It may be happening less frequently; I didn't see it last night, for example. but it is so random in its occurrence, it is hard to say for sure. -- laptop video output garbage https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/234292 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 234292] Re: laptop video output garbage
I found this from Kraptor in another thread (164589) dealing with flicker: 1) The file nvidia-kernel-nck: - You use the 169.12 driver, so it os the nvidia-new driver, it must be specified correctly. - You must tell the driver it is a mobile card, if not the PerfLevelSrc may not work. - So you must have these lines (and I only have these two, not three like you): alias char-major-195* nvidia options nvidia_new NVreg_Mobile=1 NVreg_RegistryDwords=PerfLevelSrc=0x 2) The location of nvidia-kernel-nck: - You may have (like me) two versions of this file. One in /etc/modprobe.d/ and another in /etc/modutils/ - The file in /etc/modprobe.d must be the one that applies when the driver is loaded and is the file we talk about. - The file in /etc/modutils/ must contain only next line: alias char-major-195 nvidia I don't have this second file, and in fact don't have the directory called /etc/modutils. Is it necessary, and should the settings be the same as mentioned in 2) if my driver is different from the one he is talking about ? -- laptop video output garbage https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/234292 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 234292] Re: laptop video output garbage
Unfortunately, this did not work for me. Here is what I put into the options file: #fix for nvidia problem options nvidia_new NVreg_Mobile=1 NVreg_RegistryDwords=PerfLevelSrc=0x Any problem with that that you can see? I removed this line from the options file and am trying your other suggestion of creating the nvidia-kernel-nkc file with that line. One question I have about it is whether your system is set up to look for this file while mine may not be. I have no idea what I would need to do to cause the system to look for it, if it is a problem. -- laptop video output garbage https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/234292 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 234292] Re: laptop video output garbage
I tried the fix above, but it didn't work on my M90. I assume the problem described here is the same as the one mentioned in the forums with the title: nVidia 177 driver does this There is a picture linked to the post that shows what happens to my laptop. -- laptop video output garbage https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/234292 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 234292] Re: laptop video output garbage
I think the problem reported in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=917789 is the same. In the /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-kernel-nkc file you can have two drivers: nvidia and nvidia_new you should have nvidia_new (!), After changing the file just reboot. -- laptop video output garbage https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/234292 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 234292] Re: laptop video output garbage
Hmm...I don't have that file in /etc/modprobe.d. I have the file options listed above and this is the one I entered the option line. I've that file because maybe at some time I had the nvidia-kernel-common package installed (not installed now). No, but for now no problems yet with this settings. There are some problems with the latest nvidia drivers with some laptops. So the DELL's support just told me to try this.
