[Bug 234911] Re: copy/paste bug in gedit leads to corrupted files
A (probable) fix in this for GtkTextView has been committed to trunk in the Gtk+ source. Any chance of it being backported? http://git.gnome.org/browse/gtk+/commit/?id=b7de18ab35e587df98032eaaa3d159d8f8fd64f4 This Gnome bug report also includes a screencast with steps to reproduce 100%: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=590459 ** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #590459 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=590459 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/234911 Title: copy/paste bug in gedit leads to corrupted files -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 234911] Re: copy/paste bug in gedit leads to corrupted files
Seems they can not reproduce so it does not exist :D also you have to make a new bug report again and again for people to take notice. This is the first first I have been told to recreate a bug report again but their rules! Try programming with this issue going on. Lol debugging 1000's lines of corrupted copy&paste code. [Bug 234911] Re: copy/paste bug in gedit leads to corrupted files
Why the importance is low? I think it's a very dangerous bug! It has corrupted my documents, and I didn't realize of this... or I realized too late. -- copy/paste bug in gedit leads to corrupted files https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/234911 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Sorry thought there was not a lot of point writing the same issue again for someone to mark it as a duplicate of another bug. [Bug 234911] Re: copy/paste bug in gedit leads to corrupted files
Compiz is the issue here when it is set to normal mode the copy paste bug in gedit appears. When we turn on advanced settings the copy and paste bug seems to disappear in part see below. We turn it off and it it seems to have gone completely. The select, copy and click on new location and paste bit works fine. This has uncovered a new bug this happens whether compiz is on or off : Highlight a bit of text and clicking the scrollwheel at a new location to copy and paste seems to jump back to the original location of the text selected and sometimes pasted where you have just click and other times not. This is also confusing for users who might have scrolled a couples of pages worth of text away from their select location but still better than the copy and paste corruption issue. -- copy/paste bug in gedit leads to corrupted files https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/234911 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 234911] Re: copy/paste bug in gedit leads to corrupted files
Right to follow this up... I am getting very similar behavior with this system setup: Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 gedit 2.28.0 Bus 002 Device 005: ID 045e:0039 Microsoft Corp. IntelliMouse Optical To reproduce this behavior you open the text editor as the previous user says choose an item to copy and copy it. Scroll with the mouse wheel say two line to see more text on the page then click one right click and paste and nothing appears where you pasted but it does appear somewhere else in the document. Clicking edit undo will let you find where gedit has placed the text. This is causing corruption in my programming. The solution to the bug as it stands might give a clue as to what the issue is. You must click twice on the paste location and then gedit pastes where it should do. This also happens when scrolling with the mouse button and pressing it to paste what you have selected. The text is getting pasted off screen so that is why it is hard to notice it going on. You could assume that the copy/paste failed and try again each time corrupting your work more and more. [Bug 234911] Re: copy/paste bug in gedit leads to corrupted files
I did this before, but now I found out that it's not really necessary to trigger the bug. The most important part seems to be scrolling down 20 times using the mouse wheel (and I mean scroll strokes). Just in case you ask yourself if such a complicated bug could ever occur in real life: yes, it already did several times - but this is the first time I found a (hopefully) bullet proof way of reproducing the bug.

I played around with this bug a litte further - it was not easy to find a bullet-proof way of reproducing the behaviour. However, I hope I finally suceeded: Please try the attached demo file (instructions are included). The bug only shows up when the mouse's scroll wheel is used. Probably the editor component increases/decreases a variable whenever the mouse wheel is used, but doesn't increasing this position value when the bottom of the document is already reached. I was able to reproduce the bug on different Hardy installations using gedit 2.22.1 - gedit 2.22.3. ** Attachment added: "demo file" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/15057917/bug-demo.txt -- copy/paste bug in gedit leads to corrupted files https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/234911 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

thanks for your report, i cannot reproduce the behavior with the steps you posted here, can you take an screenshot of the issue? are you using compiz ? does it happens without it? which version of Ubuntu and gedit are you using? thanks. ** Changed in: gedit (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Low Assignee: (unassigned) => Ubuntu Desktop Bugs (desktop-bugs) Status: New => Incomplete -- copy/paste bug in gedit leads to corrupted files https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/234911 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
