[Bug 238876] Re: Inmediatly after upgrade to firefox 3.0-RC1 from official repo, bookmarks are lost, and toolbar (back, forward, reload, stop) doesn't work

2008-08-05 Thread Mike Fisk
I've had this problem a few times and finally diagnosed it as stale NFS file
locks. The workaround was to make a fresh copy of my profile directory. For
example:
  mv zlpvr32r.default foo
  cp -a foo zlpvr32r.default

I determined that one or more of the sqlite files were locked. My home
directory is served via NFS (from an RHEL4 server) and this problem
always occurred after a reboot. The problem is that the NFS server is
still holding locks and the NFS client reboot didn't free them as it
should have. This could be an rpc.statd problem, incorrect hostname
setting, etc.

To see if your problem is a locking issue, cd to your profile directory and run
this command to list the files that cannot be locked:
 find . -type f \( -exec flock -nx {} -c true \; -o -print \)

So this is basically sqlite falling victim to poor NFS locking. I don't
think firefox itself could fix anything and I'm not even sure how sqlite
could be made more robust to stale locks. Using NFS4 would probably
reduce these problems since it has better locking.

try to move you places.sqlite file away ... start firefox ... if that
fixes it copy that file back to its place and see if you are still
fixed.

no i examined my extensions and saw that addblockplus is not supported by

could i be that it was activated previously and caused the problem?

but i go an error while i tried to restore the backup

cp: cannot open `.mozilla_/firefox_/vkuuxfit.default/sessionstore.js'

i got this yesterday also (when i backuped the first time), but i
thought this file is not important.

Try to remove the cache files, which are extensions.* and compreg.dat
as well as localstore.rdf and XUL.mfasl.

If all that doesnt help, see if a preference is involved by removing
your prefs.js

If that doesnt help, remove the .sqlite files

(please keep the original folder so we can do forensic in case you

sure i have them.

i cant remember that i run firefox as root. but the owner of
sessionstore.js was root. so it must be.

I tried to copy the sessionstore.js back in the firefox directory but i
still cannot reproduce the bug.

before i updated firefox i had the extension addblockplus running. no i cannot
activate it anymore.
Maybe this was the reason??

Yes i have still all the files.

Please never talk about deleting your .mozilla directory. Other users
will try that without thinking and wipe all their bookmarks and so on.

Anyway, are you sure your upgrade has finished and that you have
rebooted your system properly?
