[Bug 240713] Re: Errata document is missing

2008-12-05 Thread Teej
HI,
Sorry for the confusion the link is http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/ and there are
errata documents in each release, or on the Wiki, but most users will not want
to or need to look at them, and any bugs or problems are reported through
Launchpad or fixed in the next release. Nevertheless please report this at
Ubuntu Brainstorm as it is the best place for asking for features to be
implemented into Ubuntu.

Thank you Teej,
Ive voted for http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/16195/ which is near to what I
meant.

I hope it gets a lot of votes. It seems like its not a priority for
many, unfortunately

to SystemHelp and Support, or by clicking the Help button on the top GNOME
panel.
Marking Invalid.
With an idea to improve Ubuntu, you are invited to post your idea in Ubuntu

2008-12-04 Thread Jacob Nordfalk
Hi Teej and thanks for looking into this.

But - it seems I didnt got the message to you. Please apologize my bad
English and read my bug report again before dismissing it.

Anyway, Ill react on you comment:

I cannot believe you really think SystemHelp and Support is an
adequate information source as
http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Releases/Mandriva/2008.0/Errata ???!?

If you really think so, then please state how users are supposed to find
out about bugs and their workarounds like
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/196277 and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/149586
through SystemHelp and Support, before marking this report as
invalid.

And, BTW, https://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/ doesent work for me. It reports:
Secure Connection Failed
An error occurred during a connection to brainstorm.ubuntu.com.
SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length.
(Error code: ssl_error_rx_record_too_long)

[Bug 240713] Re: Errata document is missing

2008-06-17 Thread Jacob Nordfalk
** Description changed:

Ubuntu has, like other Linux distros, a lot of bugs.

- But unlike other distros novice users have a very hard time finding out
- what to do when they encounter a problem.
+ But unlike other distros novice users sometimes have a very hard time
+ finding out what to do when they encounter a problem.

- Please see for example
- https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/149586
+ Please see some example:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/149586

These are just a few of the showstoppers for new Linux users, which they
have NO CHANCE to find out what to do about.

I have been using Mandriva Linux before, so I'm used to relase notes and
errata.
  http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Releases/Mandriva/2008.0/Notes
  http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Releases/Mandriva/2008.0/Errata
These two documents are perhaps the most valuable documents at all for a
distro.
They save all users (especially new ones!) for TONS of time.

Now see what you get in Ubuntu:
  http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/804
- ... nothing, it's a joke!
+ (there is almost nothing, apart from some info on Wubi and Fontforge)

- But lack of an errata document with known bugs (and workarounds) makes
- me feel Ubuntu is not suited at all for beginner Linux users, becaurse
- they have hell no change whatsover to neither review their problem nor
- solve them!
+ The lack of an errata document with known bugs (and workarounds) gives
+ beginner Linux users big problems.

- So this (not the bugs themselves, but the lack of an errata document!)
- has made me confident that new users should perhaps try Ubuntu for fun,
- but if they decide to switch to Linux from Windows they should use
- another distro, perhaps Mandriva.
+ Beginner Linux users can't search for the right terms it the Ubuntu user
forums (not to mention Launchpad!), and even if they find something, it's
often over their heads to understand what they have to do.
+ So often they have no change to neither review their problems nor solve them.

- But what I would really really very much like to recomment is that we
- make an Ubuntu Errata document like that of Mandriva.
+ So I propose that we make an Ubuntu Errata document like that of Mandriva:
+ * focused on end users
+ * with the list of known serious problems and their workarounds, if
workarounds exists
+ * disregarding whether it is Ubuntu/Canonical or someone else which is
responsible for fixing the bug (end users don't care, they just want a working
system)
